In our second year of embarking on the thrilling four-day backpacking trail along the
Olifants River in Kruger National Park, I still can’t believe we’re living this dream—right
in the heart of the wild, coexisting with wildlife. Little did I know that such an experience
would ever be possible for my community in my lifetime. In just three years since the
Bushbuckridge Hiking Club started, we are proud to offer this unforgettable journey to
the local youth, made possible through the incredible support of Connected Planet
Foundation and Trail Food Company. Without them, this dream might have remained
untouched.
"Little did I know that such an experience would ever be possible for my community in my lifetime."
Capturing the excitement in mere words is challenging, but the sense of belonging and
deep connection to the wildlife and Kruger Park is beyond expression. This bond—a
feeling that flows through us as naturally as the river—roots us to the very earth
beneath our feet. As we walked through the wilderness, slept in tents, bathed in rivers,
and ate under the open sky, surrounded by wildlife, we became part of the landscape.
Each step we took left only our footprints, marking a journey that not only few have
travelled but one that will stay with us forever.
I’m immensely proud to witness the growth of the club. What started as a simple hiking
initiative amongst friends has become much more for our youth in Bushbuckridge. This
isn’t just about profit; it’s about fostering a deep respect for nature and its conservation.
We provide unforgettable adventure experiences that were once seen as out of reach for local communities like ours in Bushbuckridge.
Who would have thought our youth could experience adventure in Kruger National Park
like this? Sure, game drives are incredible, but being on foot, walking among Africa’s
great giants—like elephants—is truly transformative. Falling asleep to the roar of lions
and the distant laughter of hyenas—there’s no better lullaby than the sounds of the wild
at night. And let's not forget the initial fears that everyone had. For many, the first
thought is, "If I walk in Kruger, won't the lions or hyenas eat me?" That fear lingers for
every first timer, and on the first night, sleep is elusive as everyone listens intently to the
tiniest sounds in the bush.
Rest assured, with SANParks guides Raperd and Abel always on duty, your safety is
their top priority. They remain vigilant, ensuring a secure experience in the wild.
We are privileged to have Connected Planet Foundation fostering these meaningful
connections between our youth and wildlife. Their unwavering support ensures that we
have equal access to these pristine environments, which is vital for both conservation
and communities. These seemingly small efforts are pivotal in shifting perspectives,
touching hearts, and creating unforgettable memories that instil a lasting respect for our
natural world.
As our journey continues, we remain committed to offering adventures that inspire,
uplift, and connect our community to the world just beyond our doorstep—because now
we know it’s not far-fetched; it’s possible, and it’s ours.
