FROM CAPE TOWN

THE CAPE2KILI WALK

WHAT IS CAPE2KILI?

At the end of March 2023, Connected Planet ambassador, Joseph Makowa, aka The Travel Mufasa is setting off on the challenge of a lifetime. Starting in Cape Town, South Africa, Joseph will be trekking 6,000km across 5 Southern African countries, finishing off on the rooftop of Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro, some 6 months later.

Joseph will be doing this without any support vehicle in place, carrying nothing but his tent, supplies and food on his back. He will travel through towns and villages, cities and wilderness, meeting many communities and experiencing incredible wildlife along the way.

But why?

After Covid-19 shut down his travel company, Joseph took it upon himself to walk through his home country of Zimbabwe, experiencing his beautiful land in a way that he never had before. Joseph covered a staggering 1,500km in just 35 days, becoming the first person to ever walk around Zimbabwe.

On route, Joseph met many children, the vast majority of whom had very little experience of the world outside of their village. They had no ambitions or dreams and practically no understanding of the wonders of the natural world that they lived so close to.

Joseph set up the Cape2kili challenge to give African children the opportunity to connect with the world and to experience the wonderful wildlife that they live so close to, yet have very little access to outside of the human-wildlife conflict issue.

Along the route, we are partnering with several organisations that work on the ground, to give children the opportunity to enter their local National Park or Wildlife Reserve, and connect with the wildlife there. For many, it will be their first time entering their local wildlife spaces, and the first time seeing the iconic wildlife that tourists come from around the world to see. Joseph will be joining the children on these trips, helping to bridge the gap between community and conservation across South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Tanzania.

Funds raised from Joseph's epic walk will go towards his own project, The Travel Project, and Connected Planet Foundation's work across Africa, hopefully forging long-lasting partnerships with organisations on the ground.

Support Joseph's mission

There are many ways you can support Joseph's mission. Due to the nature of Africa, Joseph will be walking many kilometers without seeing another sole, which can make for a lonely time. You can send Joseph a message or video of support either through contact@connectedplanetfoundation.com or via our social media platforms, or you can message him directly through thetravelmufasa@gmail.com or via his social media platforms. These messages of support will go a long way in keeping Joseph's morale high when his feet are sore and he is tired of walking.

You can also donate to our Cape2kili Paypal page via the button below. Your donations will go directly towards giving young African children the opportunity to see the world and to connect with nature, both on the walk and ongoing.
